Participating in the Above the Clouds activity with other Big and Little Sisters on June 11 was an awesome experience, one that my Little Sister Marta and I will never forget. As soon as Big Sister Boston emailed me about the opportunity, I asked Marta if she was interested and she was all in for this exciting, unique adventure!

Before the flight we were a little nervous; the “scared but in a good way” feeling. Once we were in the air, the butterflies in our stomachs were gone and we were amazed at the view of Boston from thousands of feet up. I was also amazed by, and so proud of, Marta—15 years old and she was fearlessly flying a plane! She told me that she couldn’t believe that she was up in the sky flying, and that she felt like she was dreaming the whole time.

Our instructor was helpful and encouraging. He told us to be sure to check the wings three times before taking off, and he let Marta check the gas. He was also very encouraging to Marta. When she took the wheel during flight, he told her, “Marta you're doing a good job, I'm proud of you!”

Looking back at the experience, Marta and I agreed that learning to fly was not unlike learning to navigate our relationship when we were matched in 2014. It takes patience and attention to details. It takes curiosity and a sense of adventure. And, it takes a willingness to step outside your comfort zone to reap the benefits of an unforgettable experience.
