Manager of Volunteer Engagement

The Manager of Volunteer Engagement plays a key leadership role in recruiting and stewarding the hundreds of women who become Big Sisters each year. This role will also strategically engage volunteers who support our work in a variety of ways, including leveraging social media for recruitment. We are looking for a professional who is excited about leveraging their local network and community development experience. This role will oversee, supervise and manage our Recruitment Department who is responsible for prospecting volunteer and youth referral sources, recruiting and ensuring all potential volunteers experience excellent customer service and a seamless enrollment process.  When needed, this role along with the team may also engage parents, guardians, and community partners in identifying girls as potential program participants.  

The Manager of Volunteer Engagement’s initial focus will be on Big Sister’s recruitment planning and implementation. Building from a strong recruitment strategy, in collaboration with both our VP of Marketing and our Director of Corporate Engagement, the Manager of Volunteer Engagement will create volunteer stewardship opportunities. The Manager of Volunteer Engagement will be supervising a growing team of interns in addition to full-time and part-time staff.

  • Develop and oversee implementation of volunteer recruitment initiatives (both virtual and in-person), including community engagement and development of meaningful relationships and partners 
  • Build, develop and lead a team of professional staff  
  • Monitor operational effectiveness using work flow and tracking systems, gather accurate information for reports, track performance and develop measures to ensure success  
  • Oversee Big Sister Ambassador, Collegiate Chapter programs, and community initiatives 
  • Prospect and network at community, corporate, and civic events  
  • Schedule, assign coverage, and conduct information sessions and tabling events  
  • Create presentation materials and social media concepts  
  • Process volunteer applications online and via phone 
  • If needed, identify and cultivate partnerships with organizations and individuals to recruit girls as Little Sisters for the Community-Based Mentoring program (CBM) 
  • Maintain and steward existing partner relationships; leverage existing relationships to broaden recruitment network  
  • Routinely coordinate corporate partnerships with the Development team, and Director of Corporate Engagement to maximize funding opportunities  
  • Design and implement volunteer engagement activities in collaboration with site contacts and internal staff 
  • Monitor and communicate volunteer and child enrollment status and patterns 
  • Collaborate with the Joint Leadership Team to ensure that organizational goals are met 
  • Hire, train, and supervise seasonal employees and interns 
  • Foster a team culture consistent with the organization’s mission, vision, and values  


  • Bachelor’s degree with at least two years of experience in direct service, youth development, social work, or a related area 
  • At least one-year of experience as a team leader or supervisor with demonstrated ability to build and lead a healthy and high performing team 
  • Sensitivity to and experience in working with culturally diverse populations and with girls and women  
  • At least one-year experience in analyzing and synthesizing data for curriculum design and training  
  • Knowledge and experience building community relationships within the Greater Boston community  
  • Passion and a proven track record of success in recruiting others to commit their time and talents  
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills with ability to consistently meet deadlines 
  • Ability to build and lead a healthy, high performing team 
  • Ability to clearly communicate in writing and speaking to diverse audiences across different sectors (e.g. neighborhood communities, college students, corporate audiences 
  • Effective presentation and public speaking skills for audiences of 25-100+ 
  • Ability to build strong, healthy and productive relationships 
  • Experience executing an effective prospecting plan with reporting  
  • Excited about and effective in working autonomously and within a cross-functional team 
  • Enthusiastic about learning with the ability to give and receive constructive feedback 
  • Availability and flexibility to work weekday evenings and weekends for various recruitment and community partnership events, as well as travel to varying local venues 
  • Access to a car strongly preferred; valid Driver’s License required 
  • Facility with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs and data management systems; ability to generate reports 
  • Knowledge of Salesforce preferred 


Reports to: Vice President of Programs  


Language Skills: Verbal and written fluency in English; candidates who also have proficiency or fluency in other languages, especially Spanish, are strongly encouraged to apply  

Start date: Immediately  

Location: Big Sister Association Offices, 20 Park Plaza, Boston, MA. Our office will continue a hybrid working model that allows staff flexibility to work remote and in office.

Compensation: $50,000 – $54,000. Full-time, exempt position. Comprehensive benefits package including paid time off and health benefits.
