Hall of Fame Mom by Brenna Barrett

As part of our Women’s History Month celebration that recognizes women making history in everyday ways, we asked our staff about the woman or women who mentored them. Below is what our AmeriCorps Ambassador of Mentoring, Brenna Barrett, had to say.

Growing up I never fully realized how special my mom, Katia is, and it honestly took me until I was about 18 years old to fully appreciate her. Having to work for everything she has today, never being handed anything in life, my mom is undeniably a fearless leader and kindhearted soul.

Many would shy away from the unknown and face challenges and hardship with uncertainty, however, my mom is different. Being the only woman firefighter in her department, recognized in the 1993 Bay Area Women’s Hall of Fame, working three jobs to put herself through college, and so much more. I can easily say that my mom is my greatest role model, #1 fan, and best friend. I am so grateful for everything she is and I hope one day I can make as much of an impact as she has on myself and countless others.
