Mourning The Loss Of Our Beloved Mayor Menino

Posted 10/30/2014

We are all grieving the loss of our true-blue champion, advocate and friend.

It is difficult for us to find the words to express our sadness over the passing of our beloved Mayor Menino. Big Sister would not be where we are today without his deep commitment and belief in gender-specific mentoring.  He “got” that having an organization focused on girls was important. He never asked “why girls” instead he would say “why not girls?” Mayor Menino cared about every child in this City and it showed. He was never too busy; he never said maybe later; he knew the time was now and this work was urgent; and he gave us his heart and soul.

Big Sister Emily Dahl posted to our Facebook wall: “I was always amazed how, in spite of his busy schedule, Mayor Menino made it to so many of the events for Big Sister. He was a great friend to the organization, and I think it meant a lot to all the Little Sisters to see that the City’s leader cared so much about them. I know it meant a lot to me as a Big Sister to see his staunch support for helping girls succeed.”

We feel the loss so deeply and send our love and blessings to Angela and the entire Menino family.
