On May 14, 2012 Big Sister held our Annual Meeting at Grand Circle Corporation. Joining Big Sister staff members were our Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Young Professional Board, Diversity Council, Alumnae Association, and community partners.

We bid a fond farewell to retiring board members Essence McGill ArzuJanet PorterRob Egan, and Janet KrausCarol McKean also retired from the Board, but will remain a part of Big Sister as a member of our Advisory Board. We officially elected seven new board members:  David Bruce of the Highland Street Foundation; Deb Daccord, a Partner in the health law practice of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky, and Popeo, PC; Lisa Murray, Senior Vice President at RBS Citizens; Juan Carlos Morales, Senior Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer at State Street Global Advisors; Robert Lewis, Jr., Vice President for Program at The Boston Foundation; Lisa DeSisto, Chief Marketing Officer for Boston Globe Media and the General Manager for Boston.com; and Jim Speros, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Fidelity Investments.

After appointing these new board members, we thanked Max Bardeen for his service as our Board President over the past two years. Said Big Sister CEO Deb Re: “Max believes wholeheartedly in the mission of this organization and even with his demanding full-time job, he makes Big Sister a priority, always.” Max will now serve as Board Chair, and Sharon McNally, Chief of Staff at The Connors Family Office, will take the helm as Board President. “We are poised to benefit from the hard work that has been done by the staff and leadership of Big Sister in the last several years to position us as the Boston-area experts on the mentoring of girls,” said Sharon. We are also pleased to welcome Kathy Kiely, President of The Ad Club, as our new Board Vice President. Aileen Keaney, Vice President of Finance at Audax Group, will remain in her role as Treasurer.

We thanked Nicole Cushion and Chris Lawrence, who are retiring from the Young Professionals board.  New members of the Young Professional Board were also appointed: Justin Clark, of Raytheon Company, and Danielle Erdmann, of eSec Lending.

Having completed the parliamentary procedures, we concluded the evening by unveiling the 2011 Annual Report. It is clear from the bright yellow cover to the “movie” advertisement on the back page that the theme of this year’s report is a teenage magazine, which reflects the vibrancy, boldness, and energy of our Little Sisters. We had fun filling the pages with letters from our Little Sisters, horoscopes, advertisements, and interviews with our matches. Through this content, readers will learn about the impact a Big Sister mentor can have on the life of a young girl. Said Board President Sharon McNally, “These girls have faced challenges. But the relationship they have with a Big Sister has given them the strength to believe in themselves, the courage to explore life’s options, and the confidence to be successful.”
