Because of Her, I Am by Martina Chavarro

As part of our Women’s History Month celebration that recognizes women making history in everyday ways, we asked our staff about the woman or women who mentored them. Below is what our Human Resources Coordinator, Martina Chavarro, had to say.

My mom has always been my best friend, mentor, and role model. She is the smartest, strongest, and most beautiful woman I know. When she was sixteen, she graduated high school and went to study computer science. She was one of the first women in my hometown of Cali, Colombia, to graduate with that degree. When she got married and started a family, she decided to be a full-time mom and housewife. She excelled at her new role, always being the support system our family needed, taking us to tennis lessons, being our math teacher, helping my dad with accounting at his sugar factory. All of this she did with dedication, care, and love. When my sister and I left for college, she decided to pursue one of her all-time passions: interior design. She started her own company and showed us that with hard work, commitment, and passion you can make all your dreams come true. I look up to my mom in every way, and admire her for her perseverance, for her optimism, and for always staying true to herself. Without a doubt, she is my biggest supporter and has always believed in me, even when I haven’t. My greatest blessing is being her daughter and knowing that everything I am and everything I am yet to be is because of her.
